AWS set to open new infrastructure region in Indonesia by 2022

Represents vendor's ninth region in Asia Pacific

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has revealed plans to open a new infrastructure region in Indonesia by early 2022, catering to the country’s growing start-up ecosystem, large enterprises, and government agencies.

Once launched, it will be the provider’s ninth region in Asia Pacific (APAC), joining Beijing, Mumbai, Ningxia, Seoul, Singapore, Sydney, Tokyo, and an upcoming region in Hong Kong SAR.

Furthermore, the new AWS Asia Pacific (Jakarta) region will consist three Availability Zones, adding to the 61 Availability Zones already in place across 20 infrastructure regions worldwide.

However, before these three zones come online, and additional 12 Availability Zone are due to come online by the first half of 2020 across four AWS Regions, namely, Bahrain, Hong Kong SAR, Italy, and South Africa.

“The cloud has the power to transform businesses, educational institutions, and entire government agencies across Indonesia, and with another AWS infrastructure region coming to Asia Pacific, we look forward to helping accelerate this transformation,” said Peter DeSantis, vice president of global infrastructure and customer support at AWS.

“Opening an AWS Region in Indonesia will support the country’s fast-growing startup ecosystem, large Indonesian enterprises, and government agencies by helping drive more technology jobs and businesses, boosting the local economy, and enabling organisations across all verticals to lower costs, increase agility, and improve flexibility."

The Availability Zones in a particularly region are essentially technology infrastructure in separate and distinct geographic locations with enough distance to significantly reduce the risk of a single event impacting business continuity, yet near enough to provide low latency for high availability applications.

As such, each of these zones has their own power supply, cooling, and physical security and is connected via redundant, ultra-low-latency networks.

For customers who require high availability for mission critical applications, applications can be designed to run in multiple Availability Zones for greater fault-tolerance.

The region as a whole has seen new data centres and expanded availability zones from some of the region's largest players, including Alibaba Cloud and Google Cloud, as demand for high bandwidth low latency applications grows amongst the region's customers.
